Did I do that?

Ooopsie! Looks like Dustin just made the classic “if I’m not aware of it, it must be obscure” error common in children and privileged members of society, and decided that since he didn’t remember certain things from the 90s, they must have similarly fallen below everybody else’s radar, too. How could he forget Sister, Sister? Forgetting a character here or there is one thing, but an entire show? Pfffft.

Don’t worry, I’m still alive

Did you miss me? I know that I haven’t written in a while, but I’m still around. I had a great time in Dubai (pictures are forthcoming…allegedly), and more importantly, I’ve had a great time since I came home. My vacation helped me clear my head and appreciate the good things in my life, which I have. I’ve also made some unexpected new friends, which is a good feeling. It’s sometimes hard to make friends as an adult. Right now I love everything and am working on loving everybody.

Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Happy Fat Tuesday, everyone. See you guys in March!

Well played, Satanski

My nephew has written a new note,  this one to his father. Unlike the majority of the notes that he writes, this is not to protest some form of perceived adult aggression, such as homework or bath time. The spelling is much better than what he usually produces (he even attempted an apostrophe, which I’d explained to him the day before), and he wrote it to find out information for me. I’m touched. I’m going to miss the little stinker when I’m away.

RIP, Kid

I was saddened to hear that Gary Carter, one of my favorite old skool Mets (and whose trade away from the time I think I cried over) passed away today. I always loved his enthusiasm, talent, and awesome awesome 80s hair.

I’m glad that he’s out of pain, and am sorry for his family’s loss.

Really, ladies?

Dear Chris Brown/other assault-y scumbags –

Buzzfeed has helpfully compiled a list of 25 women with no self-respect. I’m sure that there are plenty more women out there who helpfully posted similar opinions on various social networks, and that Buzzfeed’s editors just got too depressed to highlight any more of them.

Here’s a sampler of that list:

hello, daddy issues

Support Chantel Whitman

From spoilikeluzhate:

I support Chantel Whitman for VP of Student Services at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus.

Do what is right Tumblr/twitter and share your support and your made up stories.

I met Chantel today and I watched her stop a moose from sexually assaulting a Toyota Yaris.

What is your Chantel Story?

I support Chantel Whitman because she’s one scary lady. She shot a man in Reno, not just to watch him die, but because she failed to observe proper gun etiquette. Ms. Whitman learned a valuable lesson from this tragic episode, and it is this practical experience that is going to make her the best ever VP of Student Services. University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus students, who do you want vice presiding over your services, some innocent with no real experience, or a woman of the world who has done and seen things you can’t even comprehend?

Exactly.

Bah!

My stomach virus/dairy allergy/next installment in my body’s 30 year anniversary breakdown is back, which sucks. I feel awful, am starving, and can’t stand the thought of eating for fear of getting sick again. I’ve decided to use this unexpected time off of work to sew (now that my stomach has stopped shouting at me, I am no longer confined to any room in my house that starts with b). Yay, sewing! I think I will make more bags.

People taking the Onion seriously is never not funny

Except when it makes you want to cry (the non-happy kind of tears). More here.

Sometimes I really really love people

The fabulous Mary Pols (@MaryPols on Twitter), tipped her hat to Dan Barry (@DanBarryNYT), a New York Times writer who’d written a piece on the heating oil hardship Mainers are experiencing this winter. He focused on an aging family who live on a small income, and the owner of the oil delivery company, who struggles to reconcile the financial concerns of his business with his caring nature. I got a little teary-eyed reading the article, but actually starting crying (like, requiring tissues and nose-blowing crying) when I read the follow-up in a Maine newspaper, about how people from all over the country had donated to a local assistance fund, to the tune of six figures on one day alone! The article came out on Saturday, and Americans from all of the country responded to the need they read about.

I am so encouraged when I read things like this! It’s easy to get the impression that the entire world is made up of jerks who only look out for themselves and a small circle of others, and I’m always so grateful to be reminded that this is not always true. It’s probably not even mostly true. It’s times like this that I appreciate the reminder the most people are decent, it’s just that jerks like to trumpet their own awfulness, while people who do things for others are not as likely to throw it in everyone’s faces.
